In short: The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S don't let you install VPN apps directly — their systems have no store for such software. So you add a VPN at the network level: set it up on your router, share it from a computer over an Ethernet cable, or run a hotspot on a phone with the VPN on. Any of the three methods encrypts all of the console's traffic, hides its real IP address and shields it from DDoS attacks by other players. The easiest is the router: set it up once and the VPN protects the console automatically.
Why set up a VPN on a game console
A VPN on a console solves three things: privacy, connection security and protection from attacks. It builds an encrypted tunnel between the console and a server, so your ISP and the network owner see only that you're connected, not what you play or with whom. At the same time your real IP address is replaced by the VPN server's.
The main practical benefit for a gamer is DDoS protection. In team and ranked games a bad actor can find your IP address and flood your connection to knock you out of a match. When traffic runs through a VPN, the outside world sees a server address with industrial-grade DDoS protection, while your home connection stays hidden. Other scenarios: safer gaming on someone else's network (dorm, hotel, coworking space), where the VPN encrypts traffic on open Wi-Fi, and access to your own library and subscription while travelling abroad, when regional services would otherwise show a different catalog. In every case the VPN is a tool for privacy and a secure connection, not a way to «get around» anything.
Do the PlayStation 5 and Xbox support a VPN directly?
No. Neither the PlayStation 5 nor the Xbox Series X|S lets you install a VPN app from its store — there simply are none, and the consoles' operating systems are closed to third-party network utilities. That sets consoles apart from phones and computers, where you just download a client.
The solution is to add the VPN not on the console itself but on the network it uses to reach the internet. There are three working methods: set the VPN up on a router, share a VPN connection from a computer over a cable, or run a hotspot on a phone with an active VPN. We break down each one step by step below.
Method 1. Set up a VPN on your router
Setting it up on the router is the most convenient option: the VPN is written into the router once and then automatically protects your whole home network — console, TV and phones included. You don't switch anything on the console itself.
The condition is that the router must support a VPN-client role (usually via WireGuard or OpenVPN). Many Keenetic and ASUS models have it, as do OpenWrt firmware and MikroTik routers. The steps:
- Open the router's web panel — usually at
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1. - Find the VPN Client section (VPN Client / WireGuard / OpenVPN) in the internet settings.
- Download the router configuration from your VPN account and import it, or enter the server parameters manually.
- Activate the connection and wait for the «Connected» status.
- Make sure the console goes online through this router — and all its traffic will run through the VPN.

Method 2. Share a VPN from a computer over Ethernet
This works even if your router doesn't support a VPN: a computer running a VPN client shares the protected connection to the console over a network cable. You need a spare Ethernet port (or a USB-Ethernet adapter) and a patch cord.
On Windows:
- Install and connect the VPN client on the computer, choosing the server you want.
- Connect the PC and the console with an Ethernet cable.
- Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Change adapter settings.
- In the VPN adapter's properties, on the «Sharing» tab, enable «Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection» and select the connection to the console.
- On the console pick a wired connection — traffic will run through the computer's VPN.
On macOS: connect the VPN, then in System Settings → Sharing turn on «Internet Sharing», sharing the VPN adapter's connection to the Ethernet port the console is plugged into.
Method 3. A VPN via a phone hotspot
A quick, cable-free method: a phone with an active VPN shares internet over Wi-Fi, and the console joins that hotspot. Good for travel and when you don't have a suitable router at hand.

For home the router setup is best: it's steadier and doesn't require keeping a computer on. On the road a phone will do. The PC method is a universal fallback.
How to check the VPN works on the console
The check is simple: confirm the console goes online from the VPN server's IP address, not your home one. Open the built-in browser on the console (or on the computer sharing the connection) and visit any IP-checking service — it should show the VPN server's city and country, not your real region.

Will a VPN slow the game down or raise ping?
A VPN always adds an extra hop to the route, so a small latency increase is possible — but with the right setup it's minimal. The key rule: pick a server geographically close to you. Then the ping penalty is a few milliseconds and unnoticeable in most games.
Sometimes a VPN even lowers ping: if your ISP routes traffic to the game server inefficiently, the tunnel may take a shorter path. Common issues when setting up a VPN on a console
- The console has no internet. Check that sharing is enabled on the sharing device and the console has the right connection type (wired or Wi-Fi) selected.
- The game complains about «Strict NAT». Enable UPnP on the router or forward the needed ports — a VPN by itself doesn't change NAT type.
- High ping after enabling it. Switch to a closer server and use the WireGuard protocol where possible.
- The iPhone hotspot won't pass traffic through the VPN. Sharing through a VPN isn't supported in every iOS build — use the router or computer method.
